May 2026 Monthly Adventure
Things are starting to heat up in the city of Austin as we enter summertime. I live within the city limits and work downtown, so I routinely experience the intense heat from the "heat island" effect that comes from all the concrete around here. Looking for an opportunity to stay cool and spend money to support local businesses, I decided to explore local coffee shops this month.
Background
Despite not really being much of a coffee drinker, I love a good coffee shop. Coffee shops are all about the ambiance and the vibes -- which is something that makes local coffee shops stand out from chain coffee shops. The local shops show off the personality of the owners, the regular patrons, and the neighborhood which is something you can't experience with major chain coffee shops. Austin is very much a coffee town (ranked number one in the U.S. in 2026 by Food & Wine) and we have some incredible local spots to grab a delicious cup of coffee. In fact, it's the local coffee shops that helped me discover that I can enjoy a cup of coffee when the beans are properly roasted and the overall quality of the drink is better. I have come to enjoy cold brew thanks to the local coffee shops of Austin, TX (along with an initial introduction to the drink from my brother) and made it my mission in this Monthly Adventure to not only appreciate the coffee shops here even more, but to also begin my quest to find Austin's best cold brew!
Highlights of Local Coffee Shops in Austin, TX
As I mentioned, Austin is a coffee town and we have a lot of local coffee shops as a result. Between my time as a student at UT-Austin and working in the downtown area, I've visited several shops in that part of town through the years. There was no way for me to visit every local coffee shop in the city for this Monthly Adventure, so I picked four shops to kick off my "quest for cold brew". I have been to half of these coffee shops and ordered various drinks (not necessarily cold brew) and the other half I visited for the first time as I explored Austin's local coffee shops. To keep things consistent, I ordered the same drink at each coffee shop: vanilla cold brew with a splash of oat milk.
Mozart's Coffee Roasters
With gorgeous views of the lake, Mozart's Coffee Roasters was my introduction to local coffee shops when I went with some friends my freshman year of college. I later introduced my brother to Mozart's and that is when I tried their coffee for the first time. I quickly realized at that time that if I'm going to drink coffee, I want it to be cold and high quality.

If you previously read my short recap of the Mozart's World Coffee Fest, you may have learned that the coffee shop puts on events all the time. I think they do a great job of offering a variety of events that can be appreciated by all ages and make great use of their space. They have indoor and outdoor seating on their deck, host events that expand out onto the lake, and they utilize the parking lot for events. For this visit, I intentionally went to Mozart's after their Mother's Day event wrapped up because I wanted to easily get in, buy some coffee, sip on my drink and enjoy views of the lake on a beautiful day, and go home. I had to wait in a line for about 10 minutes and then another maybe 7 minutes for my drink, but I got my cold brew. The coffee is quite strong at first, but the ice mellows it out as it melts and all the flavors come together nicely for a smooth drink.
Cosmic Saltillo

Cosmic Saltillo is one of two Cosmic locations around the city. I have only ever been to the Cosmic Saltillo location and I went a total of two times, each for an alumni event. Cosmic offers coffee, tea, and alcoholic drinks. In my previous visits, I never tried their coffee so I was looking forward to tasting their cold brew. They serve a nitro cold brew priced at $5.50 and it was incredibly smooth with a well-balanced flavor and sweetness from the added vanilla and oat milk. The caffeine in this drink was really strong because I started to feel a bit lightheaded at one point. Well, I say it was strong but I also don't consume caffeine very often and my body doesn't respond to caffeine as well as I would hope.
This location is in one of my favorite parts of town because I can easily get their by train on the CapMetro Red Line which is what I did for a change of scenery on one of my remote days for work. The coffee shop has primarily outdoor seating and includes an upper deck that has a really pretty view of the Downtown Austin skyline and a taco shop if you're looking for something to eat. Oh, and the lightly upbeat music made working from Cosmic Saltillo on a Friday morning a lot of fun! I even added some of the songs to a playlist that I have for songs that I hear when I'm out and about. Good vibes all around!
Flightpath Coffeehouse

This is a very popular coffee shop that is regularly visited by UT-Austin professors and students that live in the Hyde Park neighborhood. I have heard people talk about it through the years and it sounds like it's become a nice meetup spot for faculty and students. I was curious to know what the vibe was like and if the cold brew was good, so I added Flightpath Coffeehouse to my list of coffee shops to check out.
When I think of the laid back hipster vibes of Hyde Park, Flightpath Coffeehouse perfectly captures the essence of the neighborhood. The lighting is warm and the art on the walls gives the space a cozy vibe with seating options that are inviting for solo coffee drinkers or those in a small group. Unsurprisingly, I saw a professor that I knew frequents Flightpath and we chatted for a few moments before I ordered my coffee to-go (which was ready within a minute of paying). The cold brew was smooth with a slightly bitter aftertaste that was reminiscent of mocha. Priced at $4.75 for a small cup before my added vanilla and oat milk, Flightpath Coffeehouse has good cold brew with great value!

Cuppa Austin Coffee Shop
For a brief time, I lived in the Jollyville area which is very far northwest Austin. I noticed that Cuppa Austin Coffee Shop was always close by, but never actually went there despite following them on Instagram. I was impressed by their seasonal menus and knew I needed to visit the shop one day. It took a couple of years, but I finally made it happen and I went to Cuppa Austin Coffee Shop as part of this Monthly Adventure. It was extremely quiet when I walked in about 90 minutes before closing. They clearly have their regulars and the coffee shop was modestly filled with people working on laptops -- interesting because I went on a Saturday afternoon. Cuppa Austin certainly has the look and feel of a classic coffee shop.
The cold brew I ordered was $5.00 for a small and it seems that I wasn't really charged much extra for the vanilla flavoring and oat milk which was nice. The oat milk was a bit strong at first and my cold brew had a nutty flavor to it, but the crushed ice in my drink began to melt and balanced out the flavor rather quickly which I appreciated. I'd definitely go back to Cuppa Austin if I was in the area and needed a good spot to work on writing a blog post!
Wrap-Up
And that is the recap of my first four local coffee shops visited in my quest for finding Austin's best cold brew. You might be wondering if I had any favorite shops or cold brew from my exploration of Austin's local coffee shops. Well, I do! Here are my winners of this small group of coffee shops.

Coffee is by no means my area of expertise, so these are purely winners that reflect my preferences. However, I had fun venturing around Austin to visit these local coffee shops and taking time to see why their regulars love these locations so much. I definitely look forward to going to even more coffee shops that were on my list that I didn't get a chance to visit before publishing this blog post. If you love coffee or just want a nice third place to hang out at by yourself or with friends, support your local coffee shop!
On to the next adventure!
