First Visit to H Mart in Austin (Lakeline)

August 2026 Monthly Adventure

I thought it would be fun to feature a place that people go to ever day rather than a particular activity or event in Austin this month. When thinking about places that I have wanted to check out in Austin that it feels like everyone else I know has been to, I found myself focusing on H Mart and decided to make my first visit to the store my next adventure!

Background

I typically do my grocery shopping at H-E-B and and almost exclusively do curbside pickup. It saves me money and time because there are fewer products to distract me from staying focused on my grocery list. However, I have found more "specialty" type grocery stores are worth going into and walking around. I used to live close to the Lakeline area of Austin and H Mart was a store I never made it into. While I was hoping to go for the grand opening of the new H Mart location off Burnet Road, it has been under construction for several years and still doesn't appear to be opening anytime soon at the time this blog post is published. With a garlic chili oil noodle recipe in mind, I took an afternoon to visit H Mart at Lakeline for the first time to buy some ingredients and snacks.

H Mart Parking

The parking lot at the Lakeline location of H Mart is always super busy. I went right at lunchtime so it was a bit difficult finding a parking spot anywhere close to the front of the building because of all the people looking to enjoy lunch at the food court. However, there are some spots towards the back of the parking lot that are more available. There is at least one row of compact car parking, but that is not ideal even for the compact cars because people who don't drive compact cars are parking in those spots and it's impossible to squeeze into a space. The key is to either be patient and wait for a spot closer to the building or be willing to have a slightly longer walk between your vehicle and the H Mart storefront.

H Mart Shopping Experience in Austin

After parking, I had to decide which entrance to go through to enter H Mart. Going to the left entrance felt like a good choice and my mind was blown when I walked through the door. I realized I walked into the food court side of the building and I was hoping to start there anyway because I wanted to get something to eat for lunch. What I didn't realize was that this place also had an arcade and a hair salon. The high volume of humans in the food court made it impossible to find anywhere to sit and eat food, so I decide just to make a loop through this side of H Mart to check out what's around. The amount of people, lights, and sound was a bit overstimulating, so I quickly made my way over to the grocery side of the the store.

Pantry Staples

Once I found a handheld basket, I began making my way through the aisles in search of ingredients on my list to make a garlic chili oil noodle dish. I was in search of wide wheat noodles, soy sauce, sesame oil, and vinegar. It took a while to find everything because I was carefully trying to choose noodles from a very large selection and the aisles I was primarily browsing were narrow and crowded for the remaining items on my list. I did manage to get these essentials for my dish and that meant the rest of my time shopping would be focused on finding some good snacks.

Snacks

I started with getting one of those carbonated sodas from Japan in the glass bottle with the marble that you pop with the top to open the drink. I really like lychee and chose to get that flavor which I had once before many years ago. I was open to trying any snacks, but I had a very specific Japanese snack in mind. When I was really little, my cousin used to live in Japan and one time my mom and grandma went to visit. I honestly can't remember who was responsible for bringing me snacks as a souvenir, but I really appreciate whoever did because I instantly loved the flavor of rice crackers with nori (seaweed)! I found some at H Mart and bought a package in the spicy chili flavor.

After getting that added to my basket, I went to the Chinese snack aisle and a man who was shopping with his kid asked if I was looking for anything specific and if I was familiar with the aisle. I explained that I was just browsing and it was my first time at the store. When I asked if he had any recommendations, he happily pointed out some popular snacks to me after confirming the types of flavor profiles I liked (mentioning that all the snacks were created with the idea that people would be drinking while consuming them) and I grabbed a few of his suggestions before thanking him and continuing on with my shopping.

Beauty Products

As I made my way back to the front of the store to checkout, I realized I was passing by some K-beauty shelves and caught sheet masks out the corner of my eye. I immediately stopped in my tracks to get a few and then walked directly to a cashier line because I was in a position where I would get too distracted and spend far too much money on things that I didn't actually need in that moment. In the end, this was a successful shopping trip!

Wrap-Up

While I ended up missing out on experiencing the food court, I still had a great, eye-opening first visit to H Mart. I have discovered a whole new world of wheat noodles, soy sauce, and vinegar that was even more expansive than what I already thought it was. I discovered that a snack I have fond memories of eating has been available for purchase without having to travel to the other side of the world to enjoy them (Austin also has a small Japanese market in one of my old neighborhoods that I still need to check out). Plus, I was introduced to new snacks out of the kindness of someone's heart. Now that I have all the ingredients for this garlic chili oil noodle dish (I'll share photos of the final product on Instagram), I'm ready to cook it up and enjoy some new late-night snacks!

On to the next adventure!
